Australia Bans Engineered Stone Due to Silicosis Risk: The First Global Prohibition
On 13 December 2023, Australia’s Commonwealth, state, and territory WHS ministers unanimously agreed to ban the use, supply, manufacture, and installation of engineered stone — effective 1 July 2024. This made Australia the first country in the world to prohibit an entire category of building product specifically to protect worker health. The Global Precedent
Australia’s ban fundamentally changed the surface materials industry worldwide. It proved that:
- A national government could ban a billion-dollar building product on health grounds and survive the political and trade consequences
- The silica-free surface materials market is viable at scale
- Worker health can drive regulatory change faster than environmental or consumer protection arguments alone
Since Australia’s ban, California, the EU, and Canada have all accelerated their own silica regulation timelines. Manufacturers who invested early in zero-silica R&D (Cosentino, Caesarstone, several Chinese factories) are now positioned to capture the global market as other jurisdictions follow Australia’s lead.
One thing most analyses miss: The Australian ban didn’t just change what products can be sold — it changed what documentation buyers demand.
